In Tibetan, Chaksam-pa means Bridge-Builder, and is one of the many names attributed to a famous Tibetan saint known as Thangtong Gyalpo, who lived in the 14th century in Tibet. He is considererd to be a patron saint of Tibetan medicine, as well as the founding father of Ache Lhamo, Tibetan opera. Legend has it that Thangtong Gyalpo recruited villagers and gathered support to build suspension bridges all over the wide Himalayan rivers in Tibet to access pilgrimages to the sacred Buddhist sites. Semshae, which means “Heart Songs” in Tibetan, is a non-governmental, non-political project that was established with the immediate goal of creating a new audio recording of children’s songs in Tibetan. The resulting CD is the first release of a Tibetan children's music album in exile. Our hope is that this album will be a long-lasting source of enjoyment and cultural pride for Tibetan children inside Tibet and in exile, as well as in Tibetan-speaking regions of the Himalayas, such as Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, and Sikkim. Unless a conscious, consistant and urgent effort is maintained to preserve & promote Tibetan language, religion, culture and way of life, the survival of Tibetan identity is under the real threat of extinction. Hence, this project is a bid to save the rich & lively performing cultural Art (songs, dance, opera) of Tibet by establishing this Tibetan performing Arts. Tibetan Liberation Theatre is a grassroots organization which performs theatre, dance, puppet, and international music programs, holds community festivals & bazaars, and works with other Tibet support groups in organizing and actualizing mutual activities such as demonstrations, & campaigns.
