Higher Studies

The Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) was envisioned by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in consultation with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama with a view to educate the youths of Tibet and the Himalayan border region. Established in 1967, CIHTS initially functioned as a special constituent wing of Sampurnananda Sanskrit University, Varanasi.

The College for Higher Tibetan Studies is a branch college under the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics at Dharamsala. Under the guidance and with seed money from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the late Ven. Rev Lobsang Gyatso la selflessly and voluntarily took the task of establishing this institution in 1991. After completion, His Holiness formally inaugurated the institution on the 13th of August 1998.

The Emory Tibet Partnership is dedicated to creating teaching opportunities that cut across disciplinary boundaries and foster cross-cultural understanding. Since the Emory-Tibet Partnership was founded in 1998, it has been committed to bringing together the best of the Western and Tibetan Buddhist intellectual traditions for their mutual enrichment and the discovery of new knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

From the beginning, the aims of the institute at Mcleod Ganj were to develop the higher education of Tibetans in exile. This has taken the form of a combination of traditional Tibetan disciplines such as Buddhist philosophy, literature and language and modern Western subjects. This combination is used in order to educate people that they might make an effective contribution to their society in exile, and be fully equipped to return to their homeland as well qualified and competent citizens.

Kathmandu University - Centre for Buddhist Studies at Rangjung Yeshe Institute offers a unique academic education, undergraduate and graduate, leading to Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees in Buddhist Studies with Himalayan Language.
