Melong is a Tibetan rock band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The only Tibetan rock band in the United States, Melong released its debut album titled “Notes in Exile” on July 6 this year to coincide with the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The album comprised of all original songs composed by the band members and received rave reviews in the community. Melong’s music is a combination of different genres influenced by rock, reggae and blues. The band excels at incorporating traditional Tibetan instruments like Dranyen and Piwang into the songs which makes their sound unique and interesting.
Born in Woodstock, New York, to a Danish mother and Tibetan father, the young musician sought out inspiration that was as varied as her cultural background. Marstrand has been writing and performing for the past decade. In November of last year, she released her debut album, "Bodega Rose," a contemplative, acoustic work that includes accompaniment by renowned musician and composer, Karl Berger.

Dechen Shak-Dagsay is a Tibetan who has spent most of her life in Switzerland. She is married to Dr. Kalsang Shak, a Tibetan Naturopath and they have two grown up daughters Yuri Lhamo and Tara Lhanzey. She was very proud of her Tibetan origin and loved to sing the Tibetan songs with her late mother. She was always very impressed by the serenity and calm which she felt whenever her parents and grandparents practiced the Buddhist daily prayers at home.
